Killed by Caution existed as a band from 1999 though 2001 and featured Cynthia Taylor who now sings with Charming Hostess and Lord Loves a Working Man. Don Vatcher (now with The Vatcher Brothers) played bass. I played synth guitar, and virtual musican Blue Boy was on drums. I was thinking about what was likely to happen to music in the future as a consequence of ever-accelerating computer evolution. I've always been interested in the future of music (read more here), and I had recently read William Gibson's Idoru which deals with the idea of virtual musicians. Margaret and I had just gotten a digital movie camera and digital editing software, so we collaborated to create the virtual musician Blue Boy for Killed By Caution. This involved me wearing a blue suit and playing the drums in front of a green background so Margaret could use green-screen effects in post production. We filmed multiple camera angles simultaneously. At the live performances, Blue Boy was projected onto a standard 30" tube television behind the band as you can see in the "Vengeance" video below. Vlad Spears of Daevlmakr and Wolf Interval is the co-author of "Vengeance" and did the live sound mixing for Killed By Caution. The idea (among other things) was to pose the question of whether this was a good direction for music to go in, not necessarily to advocate for this type of virtual musician. The "Vengeance" video shows Cynthia laying her vocal in the studio, Killed By Caution playing live, and much Blue Boy footage created by Margaret. |
